Drill String Design Review
Our Specialist Drilling Engineers can assist in your drill string design for a particular well or, if required, even design your new drill string from scratch.
Drill string design is: Selecting items from a list of ready-made components, not deciding what an individual component will look like. The objectives of our design efforts are to:
- Select components that are able to withstand the combined loads applied during drilling operations (e.g. torsion & tension) ensuring that the stresses produced do not exceed the components yield strength.
- Reduce the risk of failure by selecting dill string components and component features that reduce drill string fatigue during drilling operations.
- Prevent damage to the drill string and achieve the desired weight on bit by selecting components that will prevent buckling while rotary drilling and allow the degree of buckling to be controlled for sliding operations.
- Select equipment that is resistant to corrosive environments such as that may damage the drill string, such as Stress Corrosion Cracking (SCC) caused by the presence of Hydrogen Sulphide (H2S), chlorides and oxygen.
Our Drill string design process for vertical, directional and horizontal wells, includes considerations for extended reach drilling, looks at the loads applied by tension, torsion, combined tension and torsion, burst pressure, collapse pressure, slip crushing and stability forces. Design steps to reduce fatigue damage are also covered. Vibration analysis, torque and drag modelling, hydraulics design, and jar placement are offered as an additional service.
Other string designs are also provided such as: Liner running strings, ESS running strings, Forces in a string under unusual conditions.
